SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Westden has been working with residents and groups in West Devon to encourage people to live more sustainably. This means leading our everyday lives in a way that impacts less on our environment and ensures a better quality of life for the future.

Waste reduction and recycling
From 2005-2006 Westden worked with West Devon Borough Council to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle their rubbish.

Local Food
Westden will be running an exciting new cookery project for young people aged between 14 and 19 starting in September 2007.

The charity will be running four groups of three linked workshops in the Tavistock and Okehampton areas - the content decided by the young people themselves!

Those taking part will get a chance to meet top local chefs including Peter Gorton from The Horn of Plenty. They will also meet farmers, butchers and others who help get our food from plot to plate.

The teenagers will learn to create food and recipes that they want to eat and will help create a ‘teenagers survival cookery guide.’

The aim of the project is to help give young people the information, skills and inspiration to create their own healthy meals from local ingredients.

Anyone who would like to be part of the project can find out more from course co-ordinator Diana Lee

Westden is grateful to the Local Network Fund for providing the funding for this project.

Westden also supported the Tavistock Eatwise successful bid for the Western Morning News Local Food Awards.

Belstone Green Village initiative
This exciting initiative saw Westden working with people from Belstone, a village on the edge of Dartmoor, to look at the way people live there and how their lives affect the environment around them.

The project is now being run by a steering group from within the village, and is co-ordinating a wide range of initiatives to make the village an even better place to live for now and the future.
