Many people in rural West Devon live well off the beaten track and far from public transport routes. Over the past six years Westden has provided six-month loans of low powered scooters to young people to help them reach work and vital services. We have also helped many young people with subsidies towards driving lessons, advice and support on rural transport issues, and one off emergency payments to help keep vehicles on the road.
Westden is currently seeking funding to continue our driving lesson subsidies and to continue providing support around issues of rural transport and sustainable transport.
Westden has just had research completed into how young people living in West Devon finance their transport which showed that a significant minority had no way of funding vital transport and are unable to reach work, job interviews and services.
The scooter loans are now run by the county-wide initiative, Devon Wheels2Work who can be contacted on: 0845 0944 308.
