Together we can tackle climate change
Climate
change is the one of the greatest challenges facing
humanity. Our climate is already changing. Global temperatures
are warming and expected to increase further over coming years.
Extreme weather events are becoming more common and sea levels
are rising.
Most scientists believe that human actions are a major cause
of these changes: mostly through the burning of fossil fuels
such as coal, oil and gas for our energy and transport needs.
This causes an increase of the concentration of ‘greenhouse
gases’ in our atmosphere: gases such as carbon dioxide
and methane.
The Greenhouse Effect: the concentration of these gases in
the atmosphere means that heat from the sun, radiated back
from the earth’s surface, is less able to escape out
of the earth’s atmosphere and is trapped like a warming
blanket around the globe causing temperatures to rise and our
climate to change.
Globally, even small changes in temperature are thought to
have serious consequences: causing drought, flooding, the loss
of some low-lying islands and increased extreme weather events.
In the UK: it is predicted we will see: drier summers, warmer
wetter winters, less snow, higher sea levels and coastal flooding
in some areas.
This a huge challenge for government, business and individuals
and we can all play
a part in helping to tackle climate change through reducing
our carbon emissions.
What can I do? It’s easy to think that the problem is so huge there’s
not much individuals can do but we are all part of the problem
and we can all be part of the solution.
By taking small actions we can all help to tackle climate change,
save ourselves some money and help make our communities better
places to live.

Climate Change Action
2008 Calendar Competition
Children aged 16 years and under from West Devon are invited to take part in Westden’s 2008 calendar competition. We want to encourage young people in West Devon to think about climate change and how they can take positive everyday action to make a difference. The aims of the competition are to enhance awareness of this important environmental issue, to encourage discussion and promote co-operative action.

| Local Action for Global
Change: Westden is working in West Devon to help raise awareness of climate
change. Over the next eighteen months we will be writing articles,
inviting expert speakers, organising debates, working with schools
and shouting loud and clear about the causes and likely impacts
of climate change. We will also be providing information about
some of the practical actions we can all take to help tackle climate
change.
Speakers and events will be advertised in the
latest news section on the home page of the Westden website.
If you need any further
information or would like to get involved in Westden’s work
on climate change, please email: info@westden.co.uk or call: 0845
